memory: knowledge higways
Our memory contains our knowledge and experience, and forms the basis of our intelligence and cognitive abilities. Without stored data we are unable to know, speak, or think. The ravages of Alzheimer's disease, of dementia, and of amnesia illustrate the importance of being able to access our data and the consequences of their loss.
Similarly, our computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices must access previously-stored data that we have introduced or that have been generated by their own internal processes. Without said data, no instruction can be executed and they are unable to function.
These astounding memory devices and their read-and-write interfaces allows us to store enormous amounts of data: hundreds of thousands of textbooks in a mere square millimeter. Thanks to their astronomical access and writing speeds they can access data (or cybermemories) in millionths of a second.
The intricate network of connections channeling the data appears like a succession of robots in some of these snapshots.
Or like minimalist bit-fields of endless memories stores, flanked by vital information highways.
Their endless extension, with millions of storage units and striking highways to connect them surpasses the capacity of human vision, and we are therefore unable to grasp the scale of the amount of information that runs almost at the speed of light through these golden tracks to be stored in the tiny blue dots.
They are astonishing microlandscapes designed like inconceivably large fields of memories and knowledge crossed by gargantuan motorways.
