INTRODUCTION
P3 artificial intelligence
In the last few decades, advances in computers and microelectronics have fostered giant leaps forward in the field of artificial intelligence, robotics, and cybernetics. New materials and progress in quantum physics, the World Wide Web, and supercomputers have contributed greatly to the fast pace of our scientific development.
The multidisciplinary field of artificial intelligence and its never-ending search for new devices and forms of communication between man and machine, as well as new areas of knowledge like neuroinformatics, microelectronics, nanotechnology, neuroscience, bioinformatics, or bionics, reflect the unquenchable thirst of humans for knowledge and for new tools, which have characterized our species for the last three million years.
A state-of-the-art microprocessor runs trillions of processes per second, and contains more
transistors than there are homes in a big city like Beijing or New York. It boasts hundreds of millions of nanometric components arranged in several interconnected layers.
Every square millimeter in the MicroSD flash memory of our cell phones can store the equivalent of the thousands of
books in your local library.
A digital sensor is able to capture several million images per second.
At the reading and writing speeds of a hard drive, we can copy the text of hundreds of books in a mere second. The connections between electronic components are computer-designed and soldered by robotic arms.
This project comprises of five series revealing the details of an artificial brain (microprocessor), of a memory (an electronic memory microchip), of an artificial vision system (a CCD sensor), of some
ciberhistory drivers (read-and-write heads in a
disk unit and a hard drive), and of the universe of connections (a printed circuit). Along this journey we will dive to the microscopic scale in order to get a better look at the complexity reached by electronic architecture, and find the invisible and surprising landscapes of everyday high-technology devices.
During this leisurely stroll through the technological microcosm we will share an intimate perspective into the intelligent tools of humans, which reveal transcendent changes in the roles of man and machine in a new technological context characterized by the presence of artificial intelligence, but always impregnated with the emotional and aesthetic intelligence of the human being, thanks to his creative mind of logic gates with switches of colors.
