hemoglobin: a fight to survive
Earth planet, atmosphere, air, oxygen, breathing, hemoglobin, and life.
The air I breathe, filling with oxygen every last cell of my body, could never reach its destination without this molecule, carrying a tiny but indispensable atom of oxygen. A single atom per molecule, but bringing to my body trillions of atoms thanks to the accumulated function of hemoglobin: 280 million molecules work jointly in each red
blood cell, and there are seven million such cells in a cubic milliliter of blood.
A product of the evolution and adaption of humans to their environment, this molecule perform its function in the complex machinery of our body and provides the breath of life, whose absence brings inevitable death. It is as necessary as the oxygen in air, and together they keep us alive.
The protuberant structures of this lyophilized hemoglobin molecules, reminiscent of fingers or tentacles, serve as a visual metaphor of their prehensile action, by which they capture an atom of oxygen and carry it, from inside a red blood cell and through the blood stream, to the many tissues of our body.
For as long as they keep doing their job we can breathe easy.
