cholesterol: an external threat
Undeservedly infamous due to the cardiovascular diseases brought about by high levels of one of its chemical forms, “bad cholesterol”or low-density lipoproteins (LDL).
However, it is unhealthy lifestyles and an inadequate nutrition (junk food) that cause alterations in its biochemical levels. We should therefore not blame these lifeenabling molecule, but our own
irresponsible behavior toward our body and our health.
Despite its negative undertones, this fetching molecule plays a pivotal role in the correct functioning of our organism. It has countless biochemical functions, like being a precursor for vitamin D and for several hormones, and is the main ingredient in cell membranes. Every cell in our tissues is held together and able to interact with its environment thanks to such membranes,
which provide structural support
for cell contents.
In these snapshots cholesterol
appears imposing and majestic,
threatening even, as if to remind us of
the central role it plays in our lives.
